The NSW Council for Civil Liberties says the federal government is proving it has somethingto hide with planned laws to crack down on whistleblowers.

Council president CAMERON MURPHY says whistleblowers are vital to democracy and inholding the government accountable for bad decisions.

The government says its Criminal Code Amendment Bill is aimed at toughening laws forespionage and the leaking of documents from Australian spy agencies.
